Summary

Keith Palmer has over 20 years success in business management, innovation and marketing, particularly in the areas of construction and technology manufacturing – managing up to 45 staff in both Sydney and Western Australia.

For the past 5 years Mr Palmer has been with Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd, most recently as Sales & Marketing Manager, and project managed various developments, been involved with national marketing efforts and establishing an Architectural concrete division as a national leader, both in revenue share and proactive Quality, sales and loyalty programmes.

In his time at Holcim he has won major commercial and infrastructure projects, grown their merchandising business from a $100 annual profit to now over $130,000 and increased their architectural concrete sales over 200% whilst at the same time increasing margins and profit.

Employing relentless marketing campaigns whilst combining the incorporation of quality procedures into all operations, Mr Palmer has grown local start-ups into national, award-winning operations and was hand-picked to directly consult to the President & CEO of a USA-based major multinational company.

Mr Palmer played a key role in the urban redevelopment of the WA city of Bunbury, developing, constructing and managing the workforces of a number of the "landmark" multi-storey commercial and residential developments in the area. He also conceived Bunbury’s original short-stay accommodation business in which he not only specified design and functionality, but also constructed and then managed these properties.

Keith Palmer is the 1987 WA winner of the Five Outstanding Australians, was critical in establishing south west WA's first internet portal in the early 1990's and has developed a reputation in both his marketing and construction activities, that near enough is NOT good enough, insisting on Quality at all levels whilst driving schedules and maintaining budgets.

Slump for Residential House Slabs and Footings is now 100mm
The Australian Standard covering manufacture and supply of concrete, AS 1379, was recently amended to provide that unless otherwise specified, the nominal slump for concrete supplied to domestic house slabs and footings will be 100mm.
This requirement has now also been included in the Building Code of Australia (BCA), the code that specifies regulations for the construction of structures. Compliance with the code on this issue is something that we thought we should bring to your attention.
For more information about the change to the Standard and the BCA, please contact your CEMEX Account Manager, phone contacts listed above.

Technical Update - Curing Concrete
Concrete develops strength and durability properties from the generation of calcium silicate hydrates when cement reacts, or hydrates, with water.

Low humidity, warm weather and strong winds all contribute to the moisture loss from concrete causing potential loss of strength and cracking, reducing the life of concrete.

Curing is the protection of fresh concrete from loss of moisture. If concrete is to gain its potential strength and durability, it must have sufficient water for the full hydration of the cement.

Concrete should be cured so as to ensure the development of full concrete strength, a hard wearing surface, water-tightness, durability properties, the reduction of drying shrinkage cracking and the reduction of surface defects such as dusting, crazing & scaling.

Not curing concrete can result in a strength reduction of about 35% compared with effectively curing of concrete for 7 days.

Start your curing operations as soon as possible after the concrete has been finished. Any delays will allow a loss in moisture - with a delay of 1 day allowing moisture loss of 700% greater than curing without delay. If you pond cure your concrete, apply the water as soon as possible after finishing, delaying only long enough to avoid damage to the surface.

Concrete curing techniques fall into two groups - water retainers, such as leaving the formwork on, covering with plastic sheeting, or impermeable membranes, and water suppliers such as ponding, fogging or the application of wet sand or hessian. Ask your CEMEX sales staff for our Technical Note entitled “Curing Methods” to explain these options further.

Cement type, temperature and the criticality of the structure all need to be considered to determine the concrete curing time. Curing guidelines are to cure until concrete has reached 50% of the specified strength or 70% for critical structures. At low temperatures, it takes more time for concrete to develop strength. Blended cement concrete takes more time for concrete to develop strength than GP cement concrete.

Important: Continuity in curing is a must. Intermittent wetting (and drying) of the concrete promotes the development of cracking - if during curing the concrete is allowed to dry out, as may happen in hot weather, the chemical reaction of water with cement stops when the concrete loses its moisture.

Remember, these curing tips DO NOT apply to decorative and coloured concrete. If you'd like to read the full Concrete Curing Technical Note, feel free to
download it now.

The Shire covers an area of 1454 square kilometres and has much to offer visitors who can either enjoy the waters of Geographe Bay or explore the inland regions with its unspoilt bushland, caves, wildflowers, galleries and vineyards.

In the city centre there are Coles, Woolworths, Action and Bi-Lo supermarkets and there are a range of smaller supermarkets dotted around the residential and resort areas with a major shopping centre also located at Dunsborough.

All the major Australian banks have offices in Busselton and these are open 10am - 4pm Monday through Thursday and until 5pm on Fridays, although credit and building societies normally also open on Saturday mornings. Overseas visitors can withdraw cash from their savings accounts or get credit card cash advances from these ATM's in Australian dollars which greatly reduces the need for travellers' cheques or carrying large sums of cash whilst travelling.

In Australia it is possible to link credit, savings and cheque accounts onto a single card, so armed with a plastic card you should be both able to withdraw cash, pay bills and deposit cheques at automatic teller machines or retail outlets. Be warned that some establishments may (quite legally) add a credit card surcharge to their account although this is quite rare but do remember that your total bill does include Australia's 10% Goods and Services Tax.

To get around Busselton there are taxis and a public bus transport service (a timetable for which is in the Shire of Busselton Community Directory) but we'd recommend hiring your own vehicle or bringing your own car as many of the attractions are out of town.

The Busselton Library located in Stanley Street in the CBD area and the Dunsborough Library in Dunsborough Lakes Drive are open Monday to Saturday with membership not only available to residents but also to visitors in the Busselton area. Bookings for informational and research purposes may be made free of charge in 1 hour blocks, with a maximum booking time of 2 hours per day, while bookings for internet based e mail maybe made in half hour blocks with a maximum booking time of 1 hour per day, with a fee of $5.50 per half hour or $8.25 per hour.

There's a number of local real estate agents in Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River with local Busselton real estate listings on the internet at Busselton Online.
